**TL;DR:** Paste a video link into the Video Public Stats tool to see its public views, likes when shown, upload date, duration and a simple like-to-view rate. These are public numbers only. Counts can be delayed or unavailable, and YouTube says it may slow, freeze or change counts while it checks they are legitimate. Watch time, retention, traffic sources and earnings are only visible to the owner.

You can see a video's view count on its page, of course. The [Video Public Stats tool](https://devanasolver.github.io/youtube-creator-toolkit/#video-stats) puts the useful public details in one place and does one small calculation for you. It is mainly for research and for checking your own videos against someone else's.

## How to check the public stats of a YouTube video

1. Copy the video link (or just the 11-character video ID).
2. Paste it into the [Video Public Stats tool](https://devanasolver.github.io/youtube-creator-toolkit/#video-stats) and run it.
3. Read the result: views, likes when the video shows them, upload date, duration and the like-to-view rate.
4. Open the video from the link in the result if you want to check anything against the page itself.

## What the tool shows

- **Views.** The public view count at the time of the lookup.
- **Likes.** Only if the video shows them. Some do not, and then the tool says it is unavailable.
- **Upload date and duration.** From the video's public page data.
- **Like-to-view rate.** Likes divided by views. That is all it is. It is not a total "engagement rate", because it ignores comments, shares, saves and watch time.

It uses the public information on the video page and passes your link through a small free proxy that stores nothing.

## Why view counts can look wrong

YouTube's [page on how engagement metrics are counted](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/2991785) is useful here:

- It says that beginning August 24, 2026, views are counted the moment a video starts to play across all formats, including Shorts, long-form videos and live streams.
- It says YouTube's systems need time to work out which views, likes and subscriptions are legitimate, and that metrics may take time to appear in the first few hours after publishing.
- It says YouTube may temporarily slow down, freeze or change a metric count, and discard low-quality playbacks, such as watching the same video on several devices or in many tabs at once.
- It says partner earnings and eligibility use their own measures ("engaged views" for earnings and "qualified views" for eligibility), so the public count is not the same as what is paid.

So a number you see today can differ from the same number tomorrow, and a public view count is not a revenue figure.

## What you cannot see, and why

Public pages do not include:

- Audience retention. This is in the owner's [retention report](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/9314415) in Studio.
- Impressions and click-through rate, which the owner sees in Studio. YouTube's [click-through rate FAQ](https://support.google.com/youtube/answer/7628154) says half of all channels and videos have an impressions click-through rate that ranges between 2% and 10%, and that it varies by content type, audience and where the impressions occurred. So a CTR number alone does not say much, and you cannot see anyone else's anyway.
- Traffic sources, demographics and watch time.
- Revenue.

If a site shows you an exact earning figure for someone else's video, it is a guess.

## Good ways to use public stats

- Compare the first week of a competitor's videos with yours, remembering you cannot see impressions.
- Notice which topics a channel repeats. Repeats often mean the audience responded.
- Keep a simple sheet for your own videos with date, views at 7 days and 30 days. Patterns appear quickly.

## FAQ

### Can I see someone else's YouTube analytics?
No. You can only see public numbers. Analytics such as watch time, retention and revenue are only visible to the channel owner in YouTube Studio.

### What is a good like-to-view rate?
There is no standard number. It varies by topic and audience, so compare videos from the same channel or niche rather than looking for one target.

### Why does a video show no likes?
The creator can hide the like count, or the data is unavailable. The tool shows "unavailable" instead of guessing.

### Why is the view count not moving?
YouTube says it may temporarily slow or freeze counts while it validates views. Check again later.

### Can I see how long ago a video was uploaded?
Yes, the tool shows the upload date when it is publicly available.
